Letting agents in Scotland will soon be required by law to comply with a mandatory Letting Agent Code of Practice and to join a Register of Letting Agents. The Property Ombudsman (TPO) scheme, alongside with the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA), has confirmed it plans to co-host a series of free events in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh on 5th, 6th and 7th of December, to help letting agents understand the impact of these changes, which come into force in January 2018.

Each of the roadshows will commence with a networking lunch, followed by a series of talks and interactive sessions on a variety of topics.  These will include a briefing from Scottish Government on the new legislation and registration arrangements, an update from the Property Ombudsman, Katrine Sporle, on ‘Dispute resolution and raising standards’, and an overview of ‘Excellence in Complaint Handling’ from ARLA.

There will also be an interactive case studies session led by Deputy Ombudsman, Jane Erskine, where real-life examples of consumer complaints will be presented to delegates who will then have an opportunity to decide how they would have handled the complaint. The workshops have been designed to help agents improve their customer service and reduce the likelihood of a dispute arising.

Delegates will also receive a complaint handling toolkit to help agents manage and resolve complaints effectively.

Katrine Sporle, Property Ombudsman, says “Letting agents in Scotland will soon be required by law to comply with a Letting Agent Code of Practice and to join a Register of Letting Agents to ensure they meet minimum training requirements and are suitable to do the job.  This means that excellence in complaints handing is more important than ever before, which is why we have designed these roadshows with a strong focus on learning and development.”

Each of the events will commence at 12 noon with a networking lunch and finish at 3.30pm in the following locations:-

  • Aberdeen: Tuesday 5th December: Park Inn by Radisson, 1 Justice Mill Lane, Aberdeen
  • Glasgow: Wednesday 6th December: Jurys Inn Glasgow, 80 Jamaica Street, Glasgow
  • Edinburgh: Thursday 7th December 2017: Edinburgh Marriott Hotel, 111 Glasgow Road, Edinburgh
